Peter Malarkey
Biography
I was born in Eugene, Oregon in 1964 and graduated from South Eugene High School in 1982. Further studies were two years at Reed College and three years at Studio Cecil-Graves in Florence, Italy.
This was followed by apprenticeship in Chicago, with Paper Conservator Douglas Kenyon, and carefully taking on small painting preservation jobs.
I moved to Seattle in 1988 and learned first-hand that there was no painting conservator working privately, who was practicing the ethical guidelines stipulated by the American Institute for Conservation guidelines and Code of Ethics. I decided to open a small practice, focusing strictly on conservation of oil paintings, in hopes that this would offer the flexibility to continue to paint too.
This dual pattern has existed ever since, working as a conservator while also making time occasionally to get painting done. I live in Port Angeles, Washington.
Artist Statement
My main interest in painting is to achieve a sense of light and atmosphere, and also to keep seeing the underlying patterns behind what appears chaotic. This occasionally means producing abstract work as well, as a means of envisioning the potential systems within and among the things we are seeing.
